"If you see your allies losing, that's your chance. Don't step between them. Take the enemy down from behind. And if the enemy is so strong you can't even do that, then just watch your ally be killed. That's what it means to be Onmitsukidō." - Soifon
There are five divisions within the onmitsukidou.
1.) Executive militia - Not much is known about the Executive Militia except that it is the first unit. Its members are dressed all in black and are known for their cold-bloodedness. They specialize in combat using Hakuda.
Corps commander: Soifon
2.) Patrol corps - Their apparent job is to patrol the various lands and dimensions to combat dangerous Hollows and other enemies of Soul Society.
Corps commander: Kuchiki Itachi
Member: Eikichiro Saido
3.) Detention unit - The Detention Unit is responsible for the imprisonment and supervision of all criminals within the Seireitei. They also have another duty known as Special Detention, which concerns those who joined the Gotei 13 but were judged to be a danger to their fellow Shinigami. They investigate, apprehend, and keep these individuals sealed away from the rest of Soul Society within the Special Underground Detention Facility, aka. the Maggot's Nest. It should be noted that those few who are kept in the Maggots' Nest have not actually committed any crime but have been identified by the laws of Soul Society as "Dangerous Elements". This unit acts somewhat similar to a prison and mental rehabilitation center.
4.) The name and duties of the fourth division are unkown.
5.) Reversal counter force - This special unit sends information within the Soul Society.
The Shinigami Research and Development Institute is behind the development of many of the Technologies that aid the Shinigami. It was founded by Kisuke Urahara, during the time when he and the Vizard were Captains and Lieutenants.
The Shinigami Research and Development Institute has performed extensive research into the modification of souls; the results of this research were artificial souls, both in the form of "soul candy" and Project Spearhead. The SRDI also tracks spirit activity in the real world, maintains gigais, and developed Kenpachi Zaraki's reiatsu-absorbing eyepatch.
President: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
The Maggots nest is a place in Seireitei which serves as a prison under the supervision of the third corps (known as the Detention Unit) of the Onmitsukidou. On the inside, it resembles a cave with an area for prisoners.
When a Shinigami becomes a potential danger to other Shinigami and Soul Society itself, then that Shinigami is brought to the Maggot's Nest for imprisonment, even if that Shinigami was not put on trial; this is to ensure that no danger will be brought to Soul Society. Most prisoners are not held inside a cell (since they cannot set foot outside the prison), with the exception the Maggot's Nest's most infamous former resident: Mayuri Kurotsuchi, considered at the time an exceptionally dangerous person. treatment for the prisoners is mostly lenient; they can walk freely and converse with one another, but the bleak setting drives many close to madness.
Neither the staff of the Detention Unit, who are called jailers, nor any other visitors are permitted to carry a Zanpaku-to into the Maggot's Nest; visitors must deposit them at the entrance. This measure means that the jailers are required to be able to control the prisoners with bare hands, so if the Shinigami entering isn't an adept at hand-to-hand combat, they may not enter. This is to prevent rebellions and escapes from the prison.
Kisuke Urahara, as Corps Commander of the Detention Unit, was once in charge of the Maggot's Nest before being promoted to Captain of the 12th Division. During the visit, he demonstrated to Hiyori Sarugaki that he is capable of subduing even the most physically powerful prisoner in the Maggot's Nest with his bare hands, which he described as a key requirement of the Detention Unit Commander's position.
